For Families: Sober Living for Someone You Love

If you’re a parent, spouse or relative looking into sober living in the Fort Lauderdale area or North Miami Beach, this page is for you. Here’s what we are, what a day looks like and how you can help.

What sober living is (and isn’t)

Sober living is a safe, alcohol- and drug-free home where adults in recovery live together and practice everyday life. It is not detox and not treatment. We have no doctors or nurses on staff.

Many people come to us after detox or a treatment program, or while attending outpatient care. If your loved one needs medical withdrawal care, that comes first. See detox & withdrawal help.

What a day looks like

  • Getting up, keeping the room and shared spaces clean, and doing assigned chores
  • Working, looking for work, or going to school or outpatient care
  • 12-step meetings, time with a sponsor and step work
  • House meetings, curfew and time with housemates

How you can help without enabling

Support the structure

Encourage your loved one to follow house rules, go to meetings and keep working. If something worries you, let a manager know rather than stepping in around the rules.

Be careful with money

Help with real needs in a way you can see, rather than handing over cash. Responsibility for their own life is part of recovery.

Take care of yourself

Families need support too. Groups like Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are for people who love someone with a drinking or drug problem.
