What to Expect Your First Week in Sober Living

The first week sets the pattern. Here’s what it looks like in a Blue Waters home, and the errands that make the next month easier.

A normal day

Morning

Getting up, keeping your room and shared spaces clean, and doing assigned chores. Room checks are part of the routine.

Daytime

Working, looking for work, or going to school or outpatient care. Residents hold a steady job or look for work on weekdays.

Evening

12-step meetings, time with a sponsor and step work, house meetings, curfew and time with housemates.

Three things to do in your first 10 days

  1. Get a sponsor.
  2. Pick a home group. A home group is one specific meeting (its name, day and time), not the whole clubhouse. “The Tuesday 7 PM [group name] meeting at your clubhouse” counts. Just “the clubhouse” doesn’t.
  3. Take a service commitment at your home group. You don’t need to wait for their business meeting. Offering to help clean up counts.

A manager will check in on all three until they’re done. You’ll also start toward five in-person 12-step meetings a week, with a signed meeting sheet.
