Miami recovery guide

Finding Sober Living for a Loved One in Miami

If you’re looking for a safe place for a son, daughter, spouse or parent in Miami-Dade, here’s what to know.

What you’re looking for

A good sober living home gives your loved one structure, accountability and a community of people who understand recovery.

  • Clear house rules that are written down and the same for everyone
  • Accountability: meetings, check-ins and testing, not just a bed
  • Structure and a path forward as they build time
  • Clear costs. Ask what is included, and get it in writing
  • A safe, clean, well-kept home. Ask to see it first
  • A track record you can verify: how long they’ve been open and what standards they meet

How to help without enabling

Support the structure

Encourage your loved one to follow house rules, go to meetings and keep working. If something worries you, let a manager know rather than stepping in around the rules.

Be careful with money

Help with real needs in a way you can see, rather than handing over cash. Responsibility for their own life is part of recovery.

Take care of yourself

Families need support too. Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are for people who love someone with a drinking or drug problem.
