Sober Living vs. Treatment: What’s the Difference?

People often use these words interchangeably, but they’re different steps. Knowing which one you need saves time, money and frustration.

Detox

Medical care to get through withdrawal safely. If you need medical withdrawal care, that comes first. Detox & withdrawal help.

Treatment

Clinical care such as residential or outpatient programs, counseling and, for some people, medication-assisted treatment managed by a doctor. MAT programs.

Sober living

A safe, alcohol- and drug-free home where adults in recovery live together and practice everyday life, with structure and accountability. It is not detox and not treatment.

How they fit together

Many people come to sober living after detox or a treatment program, or while attending outpatient care.

Sober living is where the work of everyday life happens: holding a job, going to meetings, working with a sponsor, paying rent, doing chores and living with other people in recovery. Structure makes that easier. At Blue Waters, that means house meetings, curfews, five 12-step meetings a week, random and frequent testing, and weekly one-on-ones with house managers, in a long-term, phased program.

Because sober living isn’t medical, we have no doctors or nurses on staff. Residents on MAT are welcome, and their own doctor or a program manages their medication.

Why independence matters

Blue Waters is not affiliated with any detox or treatment center. When you’re choosing a home, it’s fair to ask any sober living home whether it’s tied to a treatment provider. 10 questions to ask any sober living home.
