Why we exist

We believe everyone who is serious about recovery deserves a real chance at it: a safe, structured home, people who hold them accountable, and a community that won’t give up on them.

That belief started with our founder. As Tiffany Skuraton has shared publicly, she is a person in long-term recovery who once faced addiction and homelessness in South Florida. Early in her sobriety she dreamed of someday running a small recovery home for women, offering the accountability and support she had needed herself.

About two and a half years into her recovery, that dream became the first house. She also saw how rescue dogs could give people in recovery something rare: love without judgment. The sober-living work became known as Sober Living by Tiffany, and in 2022 it continued as Blue Waters Recovery Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The purpose hasn’t changed: structure, second chances, and a place to practice a new life.

How we do it

Structure, accountability and community, every day

If you’re serious about your sobriety, we’ll take your sobriety seriously. Here’s how that looks in every Blue Waters home.

Clear structure

House meetings, daily chores and room checks, and house expectations that are the same in every Blue Waters home. Separate housing for men and women.

Long-term phases

A long-term, phased program. Curfews and privileges ease as residents make progress and build time.

12-step meetings every week

Five in-person 12-step meetings a week, with a signed meeting sheet. Any “Anonymous” 12-step meeting counts (AA, NA, CA, CMA and so on). SMART Recovery meetings don’t count toward Blue Waters’ required weekly meetings.

Real accountability

Random and frequent monitored drug and alcohol testing, and weekly one-on-ones with house managers on sponsor, steps, meetings, work and goals.

Work and routine

Residents hold a steady job or look for work on weekdays, with job-search support and links to free classes and job training.

Peer support and dogs

Free peer specialists who visit residents at home, a recovery community around them, and dog-friendly homes shared with rescue dogs from Blue Waters Dog Rescue. Real love is unconditional.

A clear path for every resident

Every resident follows the same step-by-step checklist, from the first days to long-term goals. Each step links to free help in the community.

  1. Survival & safetyFood, a phone, ID, Medicaid and SNAP, medication, a bus pass
  2. StabilityIncome, a bank account, a doctor and dentist, legal and reentry issues
  3. ConnectionMeetings and a sponsor, peer specialists, family support
  4. ConfidenceGED and classes, certifications, better jobs, credit repair
  5. GrowthGiving back, helping someone newer, long-term goals

Non-medical and independent: we don’t provide medical treatment, and residents who need clinical care are directed to appropriate providers.
