Practical links for people in recovery housing in Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and North Miami Beach — helplines, free or reduced transportation, food benefits, clinics, disability benefits, housing, jobs, and nearby meetings.
Please verify before you go. Eligibility, hours, and waitlists change. Blue Waters Recovery Foundation does not run these programs — we share official agency links to help you get started. Call ahead or check the agency website. In an emergency, dial 911.
Nearby = within about 10 miles of the neighborhood (straight line), plus countywide, statewide, phone, and online programs that serve it. Distances are from the area, not a street address. A group button shows the general resources plus that group’s own programs; programs made only for other groups are hidden until you choose “Everyone.”
A peer specialist is someone in long-term recovery who is trained and certified to help others in recovery. They help you set goals, work through paperwork and appointments, and connect you to services and community support. They aren't a therapist, a doctor or a sponsor. Peer support is free for our residents, and a peer specialist can come to you at home. Let a manager know you'd like one, or call directly and say you live at a Blue Waters Recovery Foundation / Sober Living by Tiffany house. Learn more about peer specialists.

Medicaid rides to medical appointments
If you have Florida Medicaid and no other way to get there, Medicaid covers non-emergency rides to Medicaid-covered care, such as doctor, dental and mental health appointments, and other covered treatment. Every Medicaid health plan includes rides. There may be a $1 copay per trip unless you're exempt or your plan waives it.
How to book a ride:
In a Medicaid health plan (Sunshine, Humana, Molina, Simply and others): call your plan and ask for its transportation (ride) number. Use the phone number from your health plan's membership card. The numbers on the back of the gold Florida Medicaid card are for providers only.
Not sure which plan you're in, or not in a plan? Call the Medicaid Helpline at 1-877-254-1055.
Book at least 3 business days before your appointment. Have ready: your full name, Medicaid ID number, date of birth, pickup and drop-off addresses, your health plan's name, the appointment date and time, and a phone number.
If the appointment is canceled or moved, call the ride company right away.

Get your driver license back (reinstatement help)
Reentry
Don't drive on a suspended license. Start by checking your status for free with the state's Driver License Check. It shows why your license is suspended. For unpaid tickets or missed court dates, contact the clerk in the county where the ticket was issued, pay or set up a payment plan, then pay the state reinstatement fee (starting at $60) at a driver license office.
Broward tickets: see the Broward Clerk of Courts card under Getting a vehicle (status check, payment plans and Operation Green Light). Legal Aid Service of Broward County helps eligible Broward residents (household income up to 300% of the federal poverty level) with driver license reinstatement: call 754-312-3350.
Miami-Dade tickets: the Clerk offers monthly payment plans for unpaid tickets and court costs (sign up through its Traffic Online System). Missing a payment brings the suspension back. Operation Green Light runs October 5–18, 2026, and collection fees are removed during it (online, by phone or in person). Got a ticket for driving with a suspended license without knowing? The free Driver's License Assistance Court (DLAC) can help: 305-548-5363.

Brightline (fast train to Orlando)

It costs more than Tri-Rail, so it's best for an occasional trip, like visiting family in Orlando. For daily trips to work or appointments, Tri-Rail and the bus are the better choice.

You may qualify for fast processing if you have less than $150 in income this month and $100 or less in cash or bank accounts. DCF screens every application for this, so answer the money questions honestly. Florida policy is to approve within 4 days when you don’t already have an EBT card. Then the card is mailed, which takes 5–7 business days. Use an address where you can get mail.
No ID? Apply anyway. You’ll need to confirm who you are, but DCF can do that by talking with someone who knows you or by asking questions online. Other papers can come later. DCF Call Center:850-300-4323
Most adults 18–64 without children can get SNAP for 3 months. To keep it longer, they need to work or join a job-training program about 80 hours a month. Living in a sober home doesn’t count as an exemption, but being in a treatment program might. Tell DCF your situation.
Help with your application
Reentry
Feeding South Florida can help you apply for SNAP, Medicaid, and cash assistance, and lets you use phones, computers, and fax for your application. Call or email to set up a time.
Once you have your EBT card and PIN, you can order groceries online with SNAP from stores like Walmart, Amazon, Aldi, Publix, and others for pickup or delivery. Check each store’s website to see if it delivers to your ZIP code.
Good to know: SNAP pays only for food. Delivery, service, and tip fees need a separate debit or credit card. Some stores offer free pickup for EBT orders.
Most free delivery programs are for adults 60 and older, or people who are homebound, disabled, or have a chronic illness. Ask anyway, and say if you have a health condition.

The clinic may ask for proof that you're homeless before you register. That proof often comes from the TaskForce Fore Ending Homelessness outreach team. Call first and ask whether a letter from Blue Waters on letterhead is enough. If they want the outreach team, the white vans are at these places every week:
Sun 1 PM: 5th Avenue Church of God, 211 NW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale
Mon 3 PM: St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 318 NW 6th Ave, Fort Lauderdale
Tue 3 PM: Parking lot at NW 4th Ave & NW 2nd St (west side of NW 4th), Fort Lauderdale
Wed & Thu 3 PM: North Fork Park, 200 NW 18th Ave, Fort Lauderdale
Sat 1 PM: Main Library / Stranahan Park, 50 Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale
Call the Homeless Helpline at (954) 563-4357 to confirm where the team is that day. Ask the outreach worker for a written homeless verification.
What to bring: photo ID (or whatever ID you have), your Social Security card or number, any insurance or Medicaid letters, proof of income or no income (pay stubs, benefits award letter, or a support letter), the homeless verification letter, and a list of your medications and past diagnoses.
Van schedule: Broward Partnership (checked Oct 2026). Times can change, so call the Helpline first.

Seizures can happen while coming off alcohol or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Klonopin) and during early recovery, even if you don't have epilepsy. If you've had a seizure, see a doctor and let a manager know. The programs below help people with epilepsy get care and medication for free or at low cost. This page is general information, not medical advice.
Call 911 for a seizure that lasts more than 5 minutes, seizures back to back, an injury, trouble breathing, or a first-ever seizure.

Epilepsy Alliance Florida: doctor visits and tests if you're uninsured
For people with no insurance and no other way to see a neurologist: a first neurology evaluation, follow-up visits, blood tests for medication levels, and EEG, MRI or CT scans when your doctor orders them. If your household income is below 100% of the federal poverty level, it costs nothing. Between 100% and 200%, you pay part of the cost on a sliding scale. Income is checked again every year. Hospital stays aren't covered.
Florida Department of Health: Epilepsy Medication Assistance Program
A state safety-net program that provides seizure medication when you can't pay for it. You qualify if you live in Florida, you're uninsured (or can't afford your copay or deductible), your net family income is at or below 100% of the federal poverty level, you have $2,500 or less in savings and assets (not counting a home you own), and you're not on Medicaid. Fill out the application and send it with a recent prescription and proof of ID, Florida residency, income and any insurance. Prescriptions are picked up at a county health department or mailed to you. An Epilepsy Alliance case manager can help you apply.
Most seizures end on their own in a few minutes. Stay with the person and time it. Keep them safe: move hard or sharp things away and put something soft under their head. Turn them on their side if they aren't awake. Don't put anything in their mouth (no one can swallow their tongue), and don't hold them down. Stay until they're awake and alert. Call 911 if it lasts more than 5 minutes, another one follows, they're hurt or have trouble breathing, or it's their first seizure.

Get your mugshot taken down for free (Florida law)
Free
Reentry
Mugshot websites in Florida cannot charge you to remove your booking photo. Under Florida Statute §901.43, you can send a written removal request, and the site must take the photo down within 10 calendar days, free of charge, and never repost it. If a site refuses or asks for money, that counts as an unfair or deceptive trade practice under Chapter 501, Part II, and you can sue to force removal, with penalties of $1,000 a day.
Have a conviction? You're still covered. Most sites only remove listings for dismissed, not-guilty, sealed or expunged cases. Florida law (§901.43) covers you even without that paperwork: any site in the business of publishing mugshots must remove yours for free within 10 days of your registered-mail letter.
How to do it:
Find the site’s registered agent. For Florida companies, search Sunbiz. Otherwise check the site’s “Contact” or “Legal” page, or that state’s business registry.
Mail the letter below by registered mail from the Post Office. The law requires registered mail; the removal is free, but you pay the postage. Keep your receipt.
Include a copy of your ID and the exact web address (URL) of each photo.
If it isn’t removed in 10 days, file a complaint with the Florida Attorney General and call Legal Aid. Also ask Google to drop the page from search results.

To whom it may concern:
I am the person shown in the arrest booking photograph published on your website at:
[Exact URL of each page with the photo]
Name shown: [Name as it appears]
Booking/arrest date: [Date, if listed]
Booking number: [If listed]
Under Florida Statute § 901.43(2), I request that you remove this photograph and all associated information within 10 calendar days of receiving this letter, without charge, and that you not republish or redisseminate it. A copy of my government-issued ID is enclosed as proof of identity.
Please be aware that under § 901.43(4), refusing to remove the photograph, or republishing it after this request, is an unfair or deceptive trade practice under Part II of Chapter 501, Florida Statutes, and § 901.43(3) allows a civil action for an injunction, civil penalties, and attorney fees.
Please confirm removal in writing at [email address].
Sincerely,

Try the site's own removal form first (steps for popular sites)
Most mugshot sites have their own removal page, usually linked in the footer as "Remove," "Removal," "Contact," or "Opt out." It's often faster than the letter. Never pay for removal. Have ready: the exact page URL, your ID, and court paperwork if you have it (dismissed, nolle prossed, not guilty, sealed or expunged).
Mugshots.zone (also runs BustedNewspaper): copy your listing's URL, then open mugshots.zone/remove-a-listing (or "Remove Mugshot" in the footer). Enter your name, email, phone (they call to verify) and the URL, choose the reason, and upload your court document or a lawyer's letter. Allow 5 to 10 days.
Mugshots.com: removal is free but only with expungement, sealing, no information filed, identity theft or death. Email a legible, judge-signed court document plus your Mugshots.com ID to [email protected]. See their site policies. Up to 10 business days.
Arrests.org (florida.arrests.org): find the number at the end of your listing's URL, then go to arrests.org/remove/?id=YOUR_NUMBER, pick a reason and upload documents. Can take 5 to 30 days.
JailBase: open your listing on jailbase.com and choose the removal option. It's free and verifies you with codes sent to your email and cell phone. Can take 30 to 90 days.
BustedMugshots and other sites: look for a removal or contact link in the footer. If a Florida site asks you to pay, don't. Send the §901.43 letter above instead.
Screenshot every request you submit. If nothing happens, send the registered-mail letter. The 10-day legal deadline starts once it's received.

Reentry
Broward (Pompano Beach, Imperial Point): Broward County Library cards are free if you live, work or go to school in Broward. Bring a Florida driver license or ID that shows your current Broward address. If your ID shows a different address, bring a photo ID plus proof of your Broward address, like a utility bill, bank statement, lease, voter card or car registration. You can also apply online for a free Instant eCard. It covers eBooks and online resources and also lets you use library computers. Oakland Park Library issues its own card to Broward residents with similar ID rules. It also accepts mail in your name sent to your Broward address.
Miami-Dade (Golden Glades, North Miami Beach): Cards are free for most Miami-Dade residents, including North Miami Beach and North Miami. Bring a photo ID and current proof of address. Miami-Dade Public Library accepts, among other things, postmarked mail with your name and a date, a utility bill, or a bank statement no more than two months old. You can apply in person or online.
A letter of residency isn't on these libraries' published lists of accepted documents, so bring one of the items above or call the library first and ask.

Good credit makes it easier to rent an apartment, get a car loan and pay less interest. Whether you're starting from zero or rebuilding after jail, prison or old debts, you can do it yourself for free with the official tools below. Free help is available too.
First steps: (1) Get your free credit reports from all three credit bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. It's the only official site, it's free every week, and checking won't hurt your score. (2) Read every account, and dispute anything that's wrong or isn't yours. (3) Make a list of old debts and collections; before paying a very old debt, read the debt collection card below. (4) Pay every bill on time, every time. (5) Use only a small part of any credit limit (experts suggest under 30%). (6) To start or rebuild, ask a bank or credit union about a secured credit card or a credit-builder loan. (7) Get free help from a nonprofit coach or credit counselor.
Don't pay a "credit repair" company. Nobody can legally remove accurate, current information from your credit report, and you can dispute errors yourself for free. Under federal law, credit repair companies can't charge you before they've done the work, and you can cancel a credit repair contract within 3 business days at no cost. Warning signs: upfront fees, promises to remove accurate negative information, or telling you not to contact the credit bureaus yourself.

Fix mistakes on your credit report
Free
Reentry
Disputing an error is free. Write to each credit bureau that shows the mistake, and to the company that reported it: say what's wrong and why, ask for it to be removed or corrected, and include a copy of the report with the error circled plus copies (not originals) of your proof. Sending it by certified mail with a return receipt gives you a record. The bureau generally must investigate within 30 days. You can also dispute online or by phone: Equifax 866-349-5191, Experian 888-397-3742, TransUnion 800-916-8800.

Start or rebuild credit: secured cards & credit-builder loans
Reentry
Secured credit card: you put down a cash deposit, and that becomes your spending limit. Credit-builder loan (usually from a credit union or bank): the loan money is held in savings while you make small payments, usually over 6 to 24 months, and you get the money at the end. Either one helps only if you pay on time and the lender reports your payments to the three credit bureaus, so ask before you sign up. The CFPB found credit-builder loans help most when you don't already have other debt.

Coming home to old bills or collection calls? The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) says debt collectors can't harass or lie to you. In general they can't call before 8 AM or after 9 PM, call over and over to annoy you, threaten you, say you'll be arrested, or lie about what you owe. You can dispute a debt in writing and ask for proof that it's yours and how much you owe, and you can tell a collector to stop contacting you (they can still sue or report the debt). Before paying or agreeing to a plan on a very old debt, find out the statute of limitations for lawsuits. Keep every letter, and write down the dates of calls.

Housing: Section 8 / Housing Choice Vouchers
Section 8 (the Housing Choice Voucher, or HCV, program) helps people with very low incomes pay rent in the private market. Each local housing authority runs its own waiting list. Most lists in South Florida open only for short windows, and every list below was closed or had no open window posted when we checked the official sites on Oct 6, 2026. Applying is always free. Status changes fast, so check the official link before you count on any of this.
Read this first. It explains the waitlists and how to avoid scams.
Section 8 basics: waitlists, applying, and scams
Reentry
A voucher pays part of your rent straight to a landlord who accepts it. Usually you pay about 30% of your adjusted income. Waits are long, often 2–7 years, and most lists are closed most of the time. When a list opens, it is usually online only for a few days, and many agencies pick names by random lottery, so applying in the first minute doesn’t help.
Apply to several housing authorities. They are separate agencies with separate lists, and you can be on more than one at a time.
Keep your contact info updated. Write down your confirmation number. Report any new address, phone, or email in writing or in the agency’s portal. If they can’t reach you, they can drop you from the list.
Applications are free. Never pay anyone to “get you on the list” or move you up. Real openings are announced on the housing authority’s own website. Be careful with look-alike sites.
Background screening applies. Housing authorities check criminal history. Some offenses are an automatic denial by law, and others are reviewed case by case. Ask the agency about its policy and how to show rehabilitation. Legal aid can help if you are denied.
Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHV): HUD discontinued EHV funding, and the Broward County Housing Authority ended its EHV program June 30, 2026. Don’t count on a new EHV.
Broward has several separate housing authorities. Pompano Beach’s is closest to our Pompano and Oakland Park areas. You don’t have to live in a city to apply to its housing authority when the list opens.

HUD-VASH pairs a Section 8 voucher with VA case management for veterans who are homeless. You don’t join a housing authority waitlist for VASH. The VA refers you. Ask a VA homeless services care coordinator. Miami VA covers Miami-Dade and Broward, and West Palm Beach VA covers Palm Beach County.

Mainstream & Non-Elderly Disabled (NED) vouchers
Disability
These vouchers are for households with a member age 18–61 who has a disability. Many Mainstream slots are also for people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or leaving an institution. Housing authorities open these lists separately from regular Section 8, so ask each one about Mainstream or NED openings. West Palm Beach Housing Authority opened a NED waitlist on May 26, 2026, so check its site for current status. BCHA had no open lists of any kind on Oct 6, 2026.
Tip: Ask your case manager, Broward Behavioral Health Coalition provider, or disability services provider whether they make Mainstream referrals.

Florida Statute §1009.25 waives tuition and fees, including lab fees, at Florida public colleges, universities and school-district technical colleges for students who are homeless. A car can make work, meetings and appointments much easier, but the license comes first. Every free car program and credit union loan below requires a valid driver license.
Steps, in order: (1) Check your license status and clear unpaid tickets or fees. A payment plan is available. (2) If you have a DUI suspension, complete DUI school and apply for a hardship (work-only) license. (3) Save for tag, title and insurance, since even free cars come with those costs. (4) Apply for a free car or get pre-approved for a credit union loan before you shop. (5) Avoid "buy here, pay here" lots, which often charge 20%+ interest and repossess quickly. Until then, see Transportation for free and reduced bus passes.
Broward Clerk of Courts: check and reinstate your license
Free
Reentry
Look up your Florida license status for free and see every unpaid ticket or fee holding it up. Unpaid tickets can go on a payment plan, which you set up in person with your ID ($25 per case). Reinstatement costs $60 in person or $65 online once everything is cleared. Each spring, the Clerk runs Operation Green Light, which reduces late fees (the 2026 event was March–April).
DUI suspension: hardship license, FR-44 insurance and interlock
Reentry
After a DUI, you can apply for a hardship license (work and business driving only) at the Bureau of Administrative Reviews in your county. You'll need proof you finished DUI school and any court-ordered treatment. Before reinstatement, you must carry FR-44 insurance (higher liability limits) for 3 years. Under Florida rule 15A-5.004, you generally must be seizure-free for 2 years before a license is issued or reinstated. If you're under regular medical care, you can apply after 6 months seizure-free, and the state Medical Advisory Board will review your case.
